Excerpt:
The kid is still trying to merge with the back wall while I open up the front window and get started for the morning. There’s already a line outside so I hand him a hot, sugar coated plate of happy and tend to the waiting customers.
Rachel takes longer than expected but by the time she arrives at eight fifty, little duck looks a hundred times better. The tears have dried and his color has evened out. He doesn’t look like he’s on the verge of passing out anymore.
“So what’s the emergency, boss?” Rachel flings open the door with her usual enthusiasm. “Sounded urgent.” She turns to toss her purse under the counter and notices our guest.
“Holy shit!” She steps back and holds her hand to her chest. “You scared the hell outta me.”
She looks at him closely then turns to me, shielding him from my view. “Everything okay?” Her maternal instincts kick in and her voice has an edge to it. I know she’s wondering if I’m the reason for his bruised face and terrified eyes.
“It will be.” I finish up with the order I’m taking and untie the apron around my waist. “I need to get him cleaned up. You still good for tomorrow too?”
She’s wary but nods. Turning back, she kneels down in front of the terrified boy. “Hey there,” she says in her soothing mom voice and extends her hand. “I’m Rachel.”
“I’m Joey,” he says so quietly I almost miss it. Joey. Huh. I like it.
“Do you need us to call anyone for you, Joey?” She doesn’t look back at me but I still turn away, giving them the illusion of privacy. Hopefully, she can get more out of him than I did.
“No, ma’am.” He clears his throat. “I’m feeling better and will be on my way now.”
The hell he will. I turn and take the two steps toward him. “Come on, little duck. We’ll get you cleaned up and rested at my place.”
He looks confused but accepts my hand and lets me tug him to a standing position.

Review:
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
4.5 stars so rounding up to 5.
who remembers steve from book 2? jerk right? well he totally redeems himself in this book. he has finally realized that what he’s doing isn’t working in the relationship department and is trying to treat men better. he is absolutely fantastic in this book…and is so endearing with joey.
it seems that joey has had a bit of a rough spot and got himself into a bad situation. steve is mesmerized by joey and feels a pull to protect him. they are extremely sweet together.
there is a bit of suspense in this one. again the writing is good. i wish her stories were a bit longer as they are so good! can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
