Micah Geller considers himself lucky: at 27, he has more money than he needs, a job he loves, a debut book coming out, and a brilliant career in information security before him. What he doesn’t have is a partner to share it with—a fact that’s never bothered him much.

But the romantic in him isn’t entirely dead. When a moment of weakness finds him with a contact to a high-class escort specializing in fulfilling fantasies, Micah asks for only one thing.

Show me what it’s like to feel loved.

Excerpt:

Angel’s shoulders were broad and strong; his hands kept a warm, steady pressure on Micah’s back, holding him so close that he could feel the movement of Angel’s chest with every breath he took. They stayed near the edge of the impromptu dance floor, swaying with the music. Micah felt safely surrounded, contained—in the familiar song, in the arms that felt as if they were made to hold him, in the magic of this evening. He turned his head, just to glance at Angel’s face, and couldn’t turn away, mesmerized by the look in his eyes. They held the world within—the world of affection, of caring. Of desire. It made something stir in Micah’s belly, a long-banished want.

Angel’s eyes flickered down to Micah’s mouth, and then back up. He bit his plump lower lip.

Around them, people were dancing, music was enveloping them in its sweet enchantment, and night air cooled Micah’s cheeks. Inside, he had suddenly only one desire. And he could have it. He’d been told to take what he wanted tonight.

Christina’s Review:

Love StarvedLove Starved by Kate Fierro

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4.5 stars!

as much as this book seems like it will just be one big cliche…it’s not. it’s actually a really epic love story. and really, the one thing micah is looking for turns out to be the exact thing he shows angel.

i love micah because he’s truly a great guy. he is strong and cute and nerdy and loving. because of a really bad past relationship and his highly demanding career, he’s become somewhat isolated. he’s kind of given up hope for a future relationship and decides to just hire an escort at a friend’s urging. and this becomes a big tangled web throughout which he learns to love and how to be a best friend.

oh angel…his armor of self confidence and arrogance is pretty thick and tall. and micah strips him of that armor completely and finds that angel is vulnerable and feels worthless underneath that armor. angel was hired to show micah how it feels to be loved, but can he really show micah when he doesn’t really know?

i started to highlight some of my favorite parts but then realized that my favorite parts are basically Chapter 24. so yeah…

the writing is really good and the character development was great. the supporting cast was superb. overall, a complete story that is sure to make you smile, laugh, grit your teeth in anger, cry and then smile. really big.

About the author:

Kate Fierro spent ten years translating, editing, and reviewing other people’s words before making an impulse decision to write down some of her own. She hasn’t been able to stop ever since. Kate lives in Europe and is bilingual, with more love for her adopted language than her native one.

QA

Q:  Why do you write m/m books?

A:  When I was growing up, I didn’t even know LGBTQ fiction existed. Queer stories were not so much condemned as virtually absent in my corner of the world. I was in my mid-twenties by the time I discovered the whole wide world of LGBTQ literature, and I really wish stories with diverse, queer protagonists had been available to me when I was a teen. I want to bring more stories with LGBTQ characters to the world. It’s not about writing sexuality – it’s about writing good books with characters from all the different places on the sexuality and gender spectrum. Not all of my planned books are m/m.

Q:  What inspired you to write this book?

A:  A single sentence that I read somewhere on the Internet, years ago: Show me what it’s like to feel loved. I’d played with it for a long time before it got spun into the story of hope, chances and forgotten dreams.

Q:  What is the hardest part of writing a book?

A:  For me, it’s battling the self-doubt. There comes a time, around halfway through every story, when I start to question everything about it. I’ve spent so much time by that point planning and outlining, thinking and writing and taking notes that suddenly everything seems boring, predictable and useless. Powering through that stage is the biggest challenge, every time. With Love Starved, I unexpectedly hit the same rough patch again right before the final proofreading – I’d read my words so many times by then that I could see nothing but imperfections. It was like a bad case of not seeing the forest for the trees.

Q:  Do you pay attention to literary criticism?

A:  If we define literary criticism as professional analyses or essays, then no, I don’t. I do, however, pay attention to readers’ reviews, both when I’m looking for books to read and in regard to my own writing. I believe that constructive criticism can be valuable food for thought and, when thought-through properly, a great learning device.

Q:  What would you say is your idea of the perfect date?

A:  That depends on the person and the mood, I believe. There are days – and people – that call for an exciting night out; dinner, drinks and dancing. But sometimes cuddling on the couch with glasses of wine, marathon-watching a favorite TV show and lazily making out is just as perfect. And of course, I’d never say no to flying out to a city I’ve never been to for a day or two of exploring together.
