You’d have thought that Ben and Nikolas would have learnt that their romantic holidays inevitably end up as disasters. A short break on the polar ice sees them trapped in a nightmare of murder and deceit. Neither of them, however, foresees the long-term impact that endless winter has on their relationship. They return with a metaphorical darkness that threatens everything they have created together. Desperate and fearing for Nikolas’s life, Ben makes a bargain with a surprising ally. For the first time, Nikolas meets an enemy more powerful than he is. But fortunately, not as sneaky…

Prologue

The view from the window hadn’t changed since the last time Ben had studied it—one grey, depressing wing of the building, the car park below, and some scraggly trees, still bare in January. Farther away, he could see the roofs of some houses, and perhaps, if he let his imagination run away with it, the distant hills of Bodmin moor. He didn’t speculate in the realms of fiction much these days. He brought his gaze back to the utilitarian architecture.

The seagull was back, perched on the sill, as it had been day after day. Sometimes, it tapped the window with its beak. Ben was never sure if the gull wanted in, or for him to open the window and join it outside, flying or falling. Freedom either way.

Secretly, Ben thought the gull was an albatross. It was so vast, so impressive, that it seemed inconceivable that it could be an ordinary gull blown in from Plymouth Sound and sitting on the grimy ledge. The first albatross perhaps to make it to England, tossed on ocean currents all the way from the Chatham Islands, lost, alone. If it was, then it was in good company. Ben had never felt so lost or so alone, and he had spent a fair proportion of his life being buffeted by metaphorical winds far stronger than those that prowled the vast oceans of the world.

faq_questionmarkToday I’m very lucky to be interviewing John Wiltshire author of Enduring Night

Hi John, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Q:  Tell us something no one else knows about your characters.

A:  Enduring Night reveals quite a lot about both which no one currently knows. I think I’ll refrain from comment to prevent spoilers.

Q:  Have you ever written something that made you cry?

A:  I’m not someone who cries much. I did kill off a character, a wolf, in Aleksey’s Kingdom, which was hard, and I spent a lot of time getting the emotional resonance right in that scene. But it didn’t make me cry, no. I write stuff that makes me laugh a lot, but I’m not sure anyone else would think it was funny. I suppose I will admit to a wry half-sob over a scene in Book 6, Death’s Ink-Black Shadow, where one of my favourite characters, Miles Toogood, saves his grandmother from a house fire by placing her in the bath and covering her with wet towels. I keep this knowledge from Miles, but his grandmother won’t live to see him achieve all the things in life he’s one day going to. That, I do find very sad.

Q:  Have you ever co-written with someone before?

A:  I’m co-writing a series of mystery stories at the moment with three other authors from MLR Press. We’re each basing a short mystery in one of the seasons. I’m doing autumn—well, I’ve told them I’m doing autumn. I am…but with a twist!

Q:  What is the most difficult part of writing for you?

A:  I’ve said this elsewhere, but it’s getting the books known and read. I love writing. I enjoy editing. Publicising the books is bloody difficult! I want it to be about the books, not me. I’ve a very private person. I don’t like social media for that reason. However, I keep threatening to do something really, really bad that would get me talked about and sell the books. I have a few ideas, but a balance has to be struck between fame and imprisonment.

Q:  Name your four most important food groups.

A:  Well, I actually have a lot in common with my main character Nikolas Mikkelsen and his attitude to food. I don’t like food much. I don’t eat sugar, refined carbs, or anything processed. So my diet pretty much consists of oat bran, sardines, and vegetable juice. If I add in copious cups of tea, I guess that’s my four food groups. However, just like Nikolas, if I went out and someone offered me a very nicely cooked lobster…
