Nate woke with a start. The same nightmare, the same images…and the god-awful smell of blood. His heart was beating a hundred miles per second. Sweat clung to his T-shirt. He rocked as he caught his breath, dispelling the disturbing images.
He needed something to distract him. The nightmare had left him exhausted in mind and body. So Nate reached for the clock radio and turned to a jazz station, letting the piano chords soothe his tension.
“How the hell am I going to convince Will to watch his back?” he muttered, more to himself than to the cat, but Lulu’s head perked up, a smirk on those thin lips.
“Yeah, I know. I’m hopeless.” He scratched Lulu’s chin and smiled as she softly purred. “Yeah, I still care for him. Crazy loco, right?”
Lulu let out a sarcastic meow as she snuggled into the pillow. Nate stroked the soft fur. “Okay, okay, you made your point. The asshole never listens to me. I should just forget about him.”
Nate rubbed his stubble. He was turning into one of those pathetic cat people who lived for their pets. He needed to get laid. He should call Derrick; they were friends of a sort Derrick was fun to be with. Liked to fuck. It wasn’t love. Derrick didn’t expect that, and neither did Nate, but having a man in his bed would be a nice change from cuddling with his cat.
Nate sighed as he forced himself out of bed. Even after a hot shower and his morning routine of espresso, his bleak mood remained. He couldn’t stop thinking of Will. Now that Nate had seen him again, old wounds were torn open. Sure, Nate had had good reason to end the relationship, but no matter how many times he reminded himself why he’d left, he still felt regret.

Q: Now that you’ve gotten together, what comes next?
A: Nate (sitting next to Will stroking Will’s hand): We’ve been apart for several years. We are getting reacquainted again. Taking things slow.
Will (glances at Nate): We are? (nervously chuckles) Yeah. Nate’s right. But I’m glad he finally agreed to move in with me. (squeezes Nate’s hand) Our place now. It feels good. Right. Ah, and I want to set a date.
Nate (eyebrows rise as he looks at Will): Date?
Will: Don’t look at me like you don’t know what I’m talking about.
Nate (blushes): Let’s go to the next question, please.
Q: What was the hardest thing for you to overcome that you didn’t expect to be an issue?
Nate: Living with a neat nik. Not that I’m a slob but Will likes to live very Zen and I like more personal stuff around me. We’ve had are share of fights about decorating since I’m moved in.
Will (shrugs): I don’t like clutter.
Nate: Or cat hair, but Lulu is not up for discussion.
Will: Hey, I love our ginger, too.
Q: Who or what makes you laugh out loud?
(They point at each other)
Q: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
A: Nate (closes his eyes and lets out a slight groan): Hmm, Nutty Coconut from BR
Will (eyes light up at Nate’s groan. Shifts in his seat): Ah, ice cream, right? Pralines and Cream or any flavor with nuts and caramel
Q: What movie will you watch over and over again?
A: Nate: That’s easy. Lord of the Rings. I can watch Aragorn for hours. The elf isn’t so bad either.
Will: I’m not into fantasy. I like action movies. James Bond films. Especially the classics with Sean Connery.
