Q&A with JK Hogan
Q: In your bio you mention wanting to write a little something for everyone. What made you choose m/m contemporary for your first genre to branch out with? What is next?
A: When I originally started writing, I was doing m/f paranormal romance, but I also read a lot of m/m at the time. I didn’t plan on branching out, but a plot bunny was born when I traveled cross country to go to a wedding, so I figured, why not write it? As far as what’s next, I plan on continuing my paranormal suspense by writing a sequel for Shadows Fall, and I just finished a rather dark psychological romance. I’d love to someday write a trans* character, but I’ve got to put in a lot more research before I can tackle that.
Q: I also see that you create a ‘soundtrack’ for each book. Can you share any of them with us? What is your favorite song from any of the ‘soundtracks’?
A: Here are links to the playlists for my most recent releases, Unbreak Broken: http://jkhogan.com/ub_playlist/
And Shadows Fall: http://jkhogan.com/sf_playlist/
Each of the books on my website has a playlist listed, along with an iTunes widget where you can play most of the songs. I don’t think I have a favorite, necessarily, but Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas appears on most of these. Must be the Supernatural fan in me.
Q: I absolutely love your Coming About series – and there are so many fantastic characters there! Which one is your favorite? Which was the most challenging to write? Which was the easiest?
A: Thank you! If I had to pick one, I’d have to say Rory is probably my favorite. Maybe it’s because I put him off for so long, or because he ended up being so damaged, but he was my baby.
Rich was definitely the hardest. He was never supposed to be an MC, so I made him the biggest douche possible. So when he started talking to me about his own story, I had given myself quite the challenge to redeem him in the readers’ eyes
Justice was the easiest, because he’s basically me, if I were a closeted gay man. LOL A lot of his experiences with his anxiety disorder are my own. So while his wasn’t necessarily an easy story to tell, it was easy for me to get into his headspace.
About JK Hogan
J.K. Hogan has been telling stories for as long as she can remember, beginning with writing cast lists and storylines for her toys growing up. When she finally decided to put pen to paper, magic happened. She is greatly inspired by all kinds of music and often creates a “soundtrack” for her stories as she writes them. J.K. is hoping to one day have a little something for everyone, so she’s branched out from m/f paranormal romance and added m/m contemporary romance. Who knows what’s next?
J.K. resides in North Carolina, where she was born and raised. A true southern girl at heart, she lives in the country with her husband and young son, a cat, and two champion agility dogs. If she isn’t on the agility field, J.K. can often be found chasing waterfalls in the mountains with her husband, or down in front at a blues concert. In addition to writing, she enjoys training and competing in dog sports, spending time with her large southern family, camping, boating and, of course, reading!
