Author Interview:

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Suzey Ingold, author of Speakeasy.

Hi Suzey, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Thank you for having me! I’m a writer and linguistics student, currently based in Edinburgh. I’ve been writing for years and had my first short story, The Willow Weeps for Us, published in 2015, in the Summer Love anthology from Duet Books. Speakeasy is about a recent Yale graduate who must discover what he really wants when he meets the owner of a unique Midtown speakeasy in 1920s Manhattan.

Q: Tell us something no one else knows about your characters.

A: One of Heath’s earliest memories is of his parents telling him that he was to soon have a baby sibling. Heath had very little understanding of what this meant for him but he would spend many an afternoon sat with his Mama, peering curiously at her swollen stomach. Once the baby was born, he liked it a lot better when the baby had been in her stomach, for there had been far less screaming in the house!

Q: Have you ever had writer’s block? How did you overcome it?

A: I frequently get writer’s block; often caused simply just by not writing for a while. The longer I go without putting words to a page, the harder I find to get back into it—it’s far too easy for me to start second-guessing myself or worrying over what I’m writing. Eventually, I usually manage to tell myself to just write anything down, even if it’s awful, and just get past that block. I can always go back to it later and re-write it or cut bits that are really bad. I can’t talk for all writers, but for me it’s purely psychological. I’m a worrier and an over-thinker and the only person putting that block there is me—I get rid of it by physically removing it from my mind, although that’s often easier said than done!

Q: What book you’ve written would you like to see made into a movie?

A: I’d have to go with Speakeasy. I love movies and I’m a very visual person so when I write, I often picture things in my head as little scenes, in order to see how things might work out or how a character might react. I’ve imagined so much of this book as little scenes in my head that I would pretty much sell my soul to have it made into a movie. (Kidding! Mostly…)

Q: Do you work on an outline or plot or just let the story takes you where it wants to go?

A: When working on a big project like this, I do have to have some kind of plot or outline or else it would never even get off the ground. So, I make sure I have an over-arching story in mind: that I know more or less where the plot is going and the major plot points I want to hit, and maybe roughly how far through the book I want those plot points to fall. But I also work quite day-to-day: at the end of a day’s writing, while the momentum is still there, I’ll scribble down what I want to cover the next day. A lot of my favorite moments have come from that scribbling that I hadn’t necessarily planned beforehand.

Q: Rapid fire questions:

Favorite meal: Lasagna and garlic bread. It’s a real warming kind of meal, perfect for if I’ve had a long day and I just want something really hearty and delicious.
Favorite color: A burgundy red. It’s a very warm color to me; it feels comforting. I also wear a lot of dark colors and burgundy fits quite well with that!
Favorite ice cream flavor: It’s this thing called mango-melon that doesn’t seem to exist anywhere outside of Finland, where I get it. It’s fruity and creamy and refreshing and delicious, and I think the fact that I can only get it when I’m there (which isn’t that often) makes it that much more special.

Suzey Ingold is a writer, linguist and coffee addict, currently based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Brought up in a household where children’s books are quoted over the dinner table, literature has always had a strong influence on her life. She enjoys traveling, scented candles and brunch. Her short story, “The Willow Weeps for Us,” was included in “Summer Love: An LGBTQ Collection,” published by Duet, an imprint of Interlude Press (2015).
