They’ve spent their lives pushing each other away, but what will happen when they need each other most?

Anita Martin doesn’t expect much from life. Growing up on the street, bouncing from one foster home to another, she learned to rely only on herself. Even after she finally found a loving family to take her in, she was still an outsider—something Abraham, one of the family’s older sons, never let her forget.

Abraham Evans doesn’t know how Ani always manages to get under his skin, only that’s she’s been doing it since they were teens. She is—and always has been—undeniably gorgeous. But he’s never met anyone as pissed off at the world as Ani.

For fifteen years, Ani and Bram have agreed on exactly one thing: they can’t stand each other—until one night when their anger gives way to passion. Yet even as Ani and Bram begin to secretly seek comfort in one another’s arms, they remain emotionally worlds apart. When Ani’s life takes a dramatic turn and she realizes she needs more than Bram can give, their fragile, no-strings relationship unravels. One way or another, Ani is determined to survive. But when Bram finally admits his true feelings, he may discover Ani has moved on without him.

Missy Fern‘s review

4 of 5 Stars

After reading Unbreak My Heart (UMH), which introduced Ani and Bram as secondary characters, I braced when I heard their story was next. UMH was a gut punch and the “hero”, Shane, was an epic jerk. Bram is a jerk as well, broody and closed off. Bram is not an epic jerk, however. Ani is super curious and sarcastic. Both grew up in foster care and are tied to the same family structure through their foster parents. They work at the same family business and have dinner every Friday night with family. They circle around each other but that’s the extent of it. Until one night, Ani’s curiosity gets the best of her at a bar….

Ani and Bram are both wounded and scarred on a deep level from their pasts, their birth parents. Both struggle to overcome these hurts even as they lash out at each other, when they aren’t kissing and other spicy things. The push and pull keeps the story moving forward. You feel the struggle and want them to realize their potential.

This story covers the spectrum of loss and pain, angst and love. No spoilers but one scene about a secondary character killed me, slayed me. It brings the family closer together as it tears them apart. Characters from UMH “visit” often in this book, adding depth and loads of humor.

Ani and Bram travel a tough road. Ani evolves more quickly than Bram and when he realizes Ani is what he wants, he can’t pull his head out of his butt long enough to deserve her and all she has to offer. He lost her trust. He was selfish. He has his reasons. He forced her to make a choice after she faced a huge personal set back. She chose family and he spiraled down. Finding his way back, being the man she deserved, opening his heart, that’s the journey.

4 stars. This author continues to make me feel so much. I would like Alex’s story next but suspect it might be Trevor’s. There is definitely more to tell, some loose ends left hanging with secondary characters but Ani and Bram’s story is complete. And pretty perfect.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

nicole-jacquelyn-no-creditWhen Nicole Jacquelyn was eight and people asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she told them she wanted to be a mom. When she was twelve, her answer changed to author. Her dreams stayed constant. First, she became a mom, and then during her senior year of college–with one daughter in first grade and the other in preschool–she sat down and wrote a story.
