Synopsis

Music is Tim Chalmers’s great escape and the one thing that’s never let him down. But his band Spiral’s meteoric rise to fame has made it difficult for the drummer to maintain a low profile. Unwanted press pesters him after a public breakup with a volatile ex-girlfriend who loves the limelight as much as he loathes it. Tim’s main goal is to avoid confrontation. However, when he meets a handsome stranger in a dive bar who turns out to be someone he may know, everything changes.

Carter Hamilton-Temple might be a successful financial consultant with more brains, sophistication, and charm than most, but he always falls for the wrong guys: closet cases or men with issues. He can’t fight his attraction to the tattooed rock star, but can he trust his own judgment? When the thrill of danger combined with a fierce physical connection proves too strong for either man to resist, a quiet liaison away from the public eye and curious friends seems like a safe bet. But some secrets are hard to keep. When rumors threaten to rock his world, Tim realizes it’s time to confront his fear with his own kind of honesty.

Excerpt

“What kind of a rock star are you? You’re supposed to love sex, drugs, and alcohol. I haven’t known you long, but you seem to only really like one out of three,” Carter commented idly as he shuffled the cards.

“You’re right. I’m a sucky rock star. I rarely have more than one drink when I go out for dinner or even at a bar. Two at a party. Anything more usually leads to trouble. And I never take drugs. Even cold medicine makes me nervous.” I winked and gave him a lecherous grin that no doubt looked far from provocative in my current condition. “But I love sex.”

Thank you for having me here today! My newest book is A Kind of Honesty, number 3 in the A Kind of Stories series. This one belongs to Tim and Carter. Tim is the drummer of a hot new rock band and Carter is a successful financial consultant. They couldn’t be more different but neither can deny their intense attraction. It’s when casual sex turns to friendship that things get complicated.

I thought it would be fun to mix things up a bit and share a deleted scene. This is a short conversation about a previous boyfriend you may recognize (if you’ve read A Kind of Romance :)). Remember…all of my books are standalones. You can read them in any order! Enjoy!

Happy Reading!  Lane Hayes  xo

Deleted Scene from A Kind of Honesty:

“But the one thing I can’t seem to do is fake attraction for a suitable partner.”

I chuckled. “A woman?”

Carter grinned. “No one expects that anymore. I’m an out and proud homosexual. I was photographed too many times with Zeke on Fire Island when we were in college to deny it. It never occurred to me to lie about my sexuality, though I probably could have. I like sports, fast cars and action movies. I don’t lisp, sashay and I don’t care for glitz and bling. I love Benny and I think he’s the best thing that ever happened to Zeke, but we’re polar opposites. It’s weird th—”

“Whoa.” I put my hand up as if to stop the flow of speech. “Were you and Zeke a couple?”

He nodded nonchalantly. “Years ago. He was my first real boyfriend. We met at Princeton. We were together for a couple years. I’m glad we figured out how to be friends, but it wasn’t easy. I was crazy about him. Now I know part of my infatuation was that our relationship marked the first time I went public with an “inappropriate” man.”

“What’s inappropriate about Zeke? He successful, smart, good-look—”

“Sure, but we weren’t from the same class.”

“And that’s why you broke up with him?”

“No. He broke up with me. Ultimately I knew we weren’t destined for forever. He needed someone like Benny to put him in his place. I was crushed for a while. I love his family. They’re so genuine. George is a real dad who gave a shit about his kids. I’m happy I didn’t lose out completely. The Guldens are good people.”

“George is a great guy. I live by Bowery Bagels in the East Village. I try to stop by a couple times a week when I know he’s there to say hello. I used to go all the time when Rand was worked there.” I paused when a funny thought crossed my mind. “Did you have a thing for Rand? He’s your type. Inappropriate in every way known to man.”

“No. He’s hot but by the time I met him, he was already with Will. I’m not interested in an attached men. No matter how hot they are.”

I lowered my voice and leaned in to whisper. “I thought you got off on thinking I was a married with kids trucker from the Midwest.”

Carter crossed his arms and cocked his head. “That was a fantasy. In reality, I wouldn’t want that any more than I’d want to go out with friends of my friends. It’s much too complicated.”

“Then why are we here?”

Christina Wade‘s review

5 of 5 Stars

Man I love this series! No one will touch Will and Rand I don’t think but these guys came close. It could probably be because I’m a sucker for drummers. It could be that Carter is just amazing. I loved seeing the characters from previous books in this one. I’m hoping that we get a story for Isaac next! The writing is as good as always with Ms. Hayes. I do wish these were dual POV books because I would really have liked to be in Carter’s head and have a glance at what he was thinking.

Tim is a mess but just how much isn’t really clear at the beginning. As we learn more about him we see that he is more broken than we first thought. He had a crappy childhood and a fairly traumatic event caused him to hide himself from people. He was good to go with the flow even though he wasn’t really happy. When we experience a couple of mind panic attacks with him we get a glimpse of the real picture…that he’s not as ok as he pretends to be. He’s protecting himself from being hurt again so he doesn’t give 100% to anything except music. Carter throws him for a loop and causes him to be off-center a bit. The intensity of his feelings was a surprise that he doesn’t quite know how to deal with and flubs things up a bit. Thankfully he grows a lot in this book and faces things he’s been scared to face in his past. He realizes, above all else, some things are more important than protecting yourself. I love his growth and maturity in the story. He has an amazing sense of humor and is a perfect match for Carter.

Carter’s story is a little heartbreaking. I figured he wasn’t as put together as he shows everyone but he’s become an amazing man in spite of his life not because of it. I love that he feels comfortable being in a 5-star, really expensive restaurant and that he fits in perfectly there while also being perfectly at home in a baseball uniform eating pizza at a local dive after a game. He’s well rounded, down-to-earth and really sweet. He’s been burned in his love life but is still willing to give his all to his relationship with Tim. It took a while to find out just how hurt he was and what Tim’s lack of full commitment did to Carter. Thankfully, self-preservation wins and he’s able to get them on the right track.

These two are off the charts hot together – their chemistry almost melts the pages. Their banter is adorable. I want more of them as I have a couple of questions about where things are going…hopefully we’ll see more of them in the next book and those questions will be answered.

As always with Ms. Hayes, this is a must read.
