Book Title: His Premier

Series: Sizzling Miami Book 6

Author: Jessie G

synopsis

his-premierfinalBorn into wealth and privilege, Colin Sinclair was raised on the knowledge that money could buy anything and everyone had a price. Trouble was no trouble at all, not when the money was there to sweep it under the rug. But those lessons, learned at the knee of his father, were going to be challenged in a way that would change Colin forever.

In middle class suburbia, Arnaud Dechene learned the value of hard work, focus, and dedication to a dream. He was well on his way to achieving it, the role of Premier, when he catches Colin’s eye. Rich snobs didn’t usually do it for him, but there was something about Colin that made him impossible to resist.

Despite being opposites in every way, falling into a relationship was surprisingly—and deceptively—easy, but Arnaud never lost sight of his dream and Colin had trouble accepting that he was second place to anything. When a stupid argument leads to a reckless act, the repercussions leave Arnaud fighting for his life and Colin paying with his own.

With a little meddling from an aging schemer and intentions that are more well-meaning than realistic, their paths will cross again. However, Colin and Arnaud aren’t the same men who loved with abandon. They are older and wiser, with a history that might be too big to overcome.

Fans of the series know revenge is a double-edged sword, forgiveness doesn’t always come easy, and forgetting is damn near impossible. But love…well, that may just conquer all.

His Premier (Sizzling Miami #6)His Premier by Jessie G.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I absolutely love second chance romances. They usually are really angsty which I typically don’t love but there is something so fulfilling about two lovers getting another chance at discovering each other and their love. Reading about two characters with history that they have to work through just does it for me.

If you follow my reviews, or follow me or my posts on Facebook you know I’m a huge fan of this series and the Devil’s Pride series (they overlap at times). I was warned that this book would be hard to read. And after a bit of reflection, I remembered that ALL the books in this series have some extremely painful scenes/life stories in them. I almost couldn’t read about and had to skip over what happened to Davin. Red’s story damn near broke me. Don’t even get me started on the agony of Javier and Saul in The Protector. I had to set my kindle down after reading the prologue in Tricking Chase and take a break before continuing. Micah and Garrison’s anguish is palpable in their SHORT STORY. BUT, none of that prepared me for what Colin and Arnaud went through and I had no idea that was coming. And now, I really want to go back through this series and Devil’s Pride (again) to see if I can pick up anything I missed about Colin in those books.

These guys…I won’t tell you what happened but I will tell you it was absolutely tragic. And the full impact of what happened isn’t fully realized until almost the end of the book when Colin reflects back during the benefit performance and recognizes everything he’s missed for the last 10 years. When they forget the past and stow away the pain, they are beautiful together. Arnaud’s pushy, quirky, exuberant personality is the perfect balance for Colin’s reserved controlled, privileged personality. Arnaud absolutely brings out the best in Colin. Colin’s adoration of Arnaud had him willing to make every sacrifice for him. In this story, we not only learn of their history and experience the beginning of their healing in the present; Jessie has paved the way for their future. Thankfully, we’re informed at the end of the book there is more to come because these guys aren’t done yet. And we’re not done with them yet.

As always it was awesome to see most of the guys from the series in this book…Saul, Chris and Owen play pretty big roles here and of course take over their scenes. We also get a fantastic surprise cameo from a couple of fellows in New York. And never fear; the Queen of Teasing didn’t let us down as there are quite a few teasers of what’s to come with Jacky and damn if I’m not as curious as ever with that one.

Dear Readers of the BFD Book Blog,

On September 7th, I emailed the advanced reader copy of His Premier to BFD Book Blog for the tour we’re on now. On September 12th, Christina PM’d me to tell me she had only two questions. To say that this was shocking would be a major understatement since her interview technique is akin to military interrogation tactics that usually leave me huddled in the corner screaming “I’ll tell you everything, just make it stop!” (This is not true! Incidentally, Jessie never tells us everything even if we use our most intense interrogation tactics, much to our dismay. -Christina)

Needless to say, we have different definitions of the word “two.” Me, being the silly author that I am, prefer good old Miriam Webster’s definition (see illustration A), while Christina has obviously subscribed to that newfangled math their teaching in common core classrooms. That conversation included Wendy from Book Lovers 4Ever and continued on for quite a bit where they both hammered me with questions. So, color me surprised when I receive this Q&A in my email while we’re still talking and it’s 5 paragraphs of questions (this is a gross exaggeration -Christina)! Of course, I had to call her out (see illustration B).

The moral of the story, when Christina says I just have a couple of questions…run! Don’t hesitate, don’t fall for her friendly smile emoji…just run! (It’s not as bad as Jessie makes it out to be…again a gross exaggeration!)

Christina’s “2 questions” answered”

Q: So there was quite a build up to the dinner at Saul’s house with Arnaud for the first time but we didn’t get to see it.  What happened?  Where are those conversations?  Who was the kid that Saul caught when walking by?  Was everyone there or was anyone missing?

A: Now, see, I didn’t think I was building up to the dinner so much as I was building up to the words Arnaud needed to hear from Colin. The whole thing was a huge step between them and I didn’t want that conversation overshadowed by what we all know would be a crazy family dinner. Plus, Thanksgiving coming up and November’s slice of life scene is Colin & Arnaud. That means another family dinner and I thought that would be the perfect vehicle for such a scene. As for who the kid was…Lucas Malone, of course. Was there anyone missing? Of course, Red says so when they’re in the coffee shop in NYC. As for who? Yeah, you’ll have to wait on that.

Q: Will we see Colin’s father again or is he just gone for good?  What about Colin’s grandmother?  She was pretty involved at the beginning and then kind of disappeared.

A: Yes and no, yes, and I know 🙂 (You know, Jessie says all this stuff about me above but she neglects to mention that she is a HUGE tease and doesn’t really answer my questions which is why I HAVE to include so many questions – so I’ll at least get 1 or 2 answers! -Christina)

Q: Arnaud’s new goal – his dance studio for folks with disability – is a fascinating one.  I’ve never heard of that and I’m now totally interested in seeing if I can find that around Dallas to see it live.  How did learn about that and how did you do your research for dancers with disabilities?

danceability

A: DanceAbility is a wonderful organization that encourages the expression of dance in people of all abilities. You can find out more information and donate to their efforts via their website http://www.danceability.com/. I don’t know how to find a listing of studios that have certified DanceAbility teachers, but I’m sure if you email them, they can point you in the right direction.

Q: In addition to meeting Arnaud, we meet his brother Michel who I KNOW has a story to tell.  Are we going to get that and if so, is there anything you can tell us about that?  I feel like he came out of nowhere.

A: The biggest (problem?) with writing a series is that every new character comes out of nowhere and fans of the series are left wondering WTF. Someone new? Is she allowed to do that? Well, yes, how else can this series expand unless I add people? Oh, wait, I wasn’t going to, right? All along even I was positive that after Jacky’s book (Controlled Burn, 2017), this series would be over. Then Michel hit the page. I knew he was coming, had planned for him, but I didn’t know I would be quite so intrigued by him. So, the short answer is yes, he’ll have his own book and no, I can’t tell you anything about it.

Q: We see a pretty intense scene with Jacky in this book and it felt like major foreshadowing for his story.   When will he be getting a book and have we met his love interest yet?  Will Arnaud find out about them sleeping together for comfort and if so, when?  Is there anything you can tell us about him in anticipation of his story?  Will the timetable of that book be after everything we’ve read so far or are we going to see some parallels at some point?

A: As mentioned above, Jacky’s book is schedule for next year and yes, you’ve very briefly met his love interest. (No, it’s not Michel) And yes, Arnaud will absolutely find out in their sequel (Extended Run, also 2017). Is there anything I can tell you? Jacky is one fucked up dude, so buy tissues. The timetable of that book will have two scenes that run parallel with other books (The Protector and Saving Saul), but will mostly focus on their present with a flashback if I can stomach writing it.

Like many readers, the dream of being a writer has been with me a long time. After three decades of trying, I’d begun to doubt. Thanks to social media, I followed my favorite authors hoping to glean some words of wisdom as I pounded out half-formed ideas with alarming regularity. Two repetitive themes emerged: To be a great writer you must read a lot and your butt must be in the chair every day like it’s a job. The more you write, the easier it will be to write and the better you will be at writing. I took that advice to heart and write every day. With three series in the works and counting, it’s been amazing to have made this dream my reality.

I am a firm believer in marriage equality, love at first sight, power dynamics and happily ever after. I’m a lover of strong secondary characters and series filled with families, biological or chosen. All are themes you’ll find throughout my books.
