This is only my second book by Ms. Martinez but I am again blown away by the story. I love how unique the story is even though it’s not really anything new. The cast of characters introduced here guarantee that the entire series will be a must read series.
Rhion and Jude are bound by a life-altering event which affected each of them profoundly differently. Rhion’s struggles are compounded and over the years has become a bit of a mess. She is surprisingly well adjusted considering what she’s lived through. She is incredibly strong and ridiculously quirky. Jude has lived with guilt and remorse and has never dealt with what happened between them. He’s just a big a mess as Rhion but is hiding it better. He is the quintessential alpha protector (as the rest of the men in the book seem to be). As they re-discover each other, they realize how great they are together and help each other over come the issues they are still struggling with years after that event.
The suspense side of the story was a surprise almost until the secrets were revealed. The bad guy is truly a really bad guy and things are not what they seem throughout the story. There are some surprising subplots along the way that I hope to see in future books.
The epilogue gives us a quick possible taste which couples we’ll see later on although I wouldn’t be surprised if some of that changes. I want Johnson’s book now but I’m guessing as complicated as he is, we’ll have to wait.
