Release Blitz including Review – Rooke by Callie Hart

Rooke by Callie Hart
Release: March 14
Available: Amazon and Kindle Unlimited

Watchmaker.  Car thief.  Heartbreaker extraordinaire.

Rooke Blackheath has spent enough time in juvie to know that he really doesn’t want to go to jail. The food sucks, the clothes itch, and there are absolutely no women in sight. Well…none he wants to fuck, anyway.

He should probably stop boosting cars, but the money is stellar and the high is out of this world. And why should he turn his back on something that sets his soul on fire anyway?

The answer to that question comes in an unexpected form—a petite five-foot-three firecracker named Sasha, who refuses to give him the time of day no matter how thick he lays on the charm.

Rooke’s not easily deterred, though. Just like the watches he builds from scratch, Rooke knows all too well how women tick.

Women are a game to him. A game he always wins.

Sasha doesn’t stand a chance.

Sasha Connor’s life has been permanently derailed since her son died five years ago. You wouldn’t know it to look at her, of course. She has a great job, a beautiful house, and caring friends. Every week, she hosts a book club featuring the sexiest, most romantic stories on the planet, and every week she falls for a new fictional knight in shining armor.

Fictional men are perfect. They don’t hurt you. They don’t break your heart. They don’t cheat on you after your child dies, and they rarely ever leave the toilet seat up.

When Rooke Blackheath shows up at Sasha’s workplace, it’s clear he’s nothing like the men who grace the pages of her favorite books. Dangerous, arrogant, sharp-tongued and sarcastic, Rooke’s not the kind of guy she needs in her life. Not to mention the fact that he’s eleven years her junior.

As far as Sasha is concerned, Rooke doesn’t just live in a different world. He lives in a different galaxy altogether. She’d like to keep it that way, but fate appears to have other plans.

When Cinderella lost her shoe, Prince Charming showed up at her door.

When Sasha Connor loses her book, an entirely different kind of rogue comes a-knocking.

Christina‘s review

5 of 5 Stars

Ok. Wow. Um…

Let’s start with this…Rooke is the first Callie Hart book I’ve read. And I honestly can’t say whether or not I’ll read another one but that’s not a bad thing, really. This book is getting a 5 star rating from me because it is a 5 star read…it’s just not for me, at all (and no I am not crazy for giving a book I didn’t really like 5 stars). I am, for all intents and purposes, a pure romance reader. I like sticky sweet, give me all the feels romance. I need to be able to gush when I finish a book. I typically will not read anything dark or disturbing. I don’t like MC books. I don’t like dark books of any kind – mobs, captivity, anything that asks me to think in the gray area while reading the story. This book is dark, at times depressing and keeps the reader in the charcoal gray area through the entire story. There were maybe two really sweet moments that melted me for one second, but that was quickly ripped away.

I almost stopped reading in chapter 1. Everything about that chapter completely gutted me and I don’t mean in a way that can be made up later one with some really sweet romance. I mean it gutted me to the point I felt nauseous and didn’t want to go on. I immediately had to reach out to someone to get poison out of me…but I persevered and finished the book pretty much without stopping. It is well written, if a bit farfetched. It is all over the map but I’m guessing a bit typical for characters that dabble in illegal activity.

There are basically three story lines…Rooke’s story, Sasha’s story and their combined story. Sasha has the most straightforward plotline, probably…maybe. She literally went through hell and back. And really, I’m not sure she’s back until very late in the story at which time she’s already been submerged into another fresh hell. Andrew, her ex-husband is quite possibly the biggest douche I’ve ever met in a book. I was stop down, mouth agape, flounderinly appalled by him. What Sasha goes through in this book brings her out of her state of comfortably numb and she actually is able to handle talking and thinking about her son without shutting down, which is great progress for her. I think I like her, but really at this point I can’t honestly tell.

Rooke is your typical bad boy (in the illegal sense as well as the alpha male bada$$ kind) who is unapologetic in every way. When he meets Sasha, she becomes his and he will stop at nothing to convince her that she belongs to him…forever. I love alpha, take over the world men just as much as the next person and I love his absolute no bullsh!t attitude but I never really bonded with him or felt like I cared about what happened with him. I wanted him to be what Sasha needed but wouldn’t have been completely heartbroken if he wasn’t. He is quirky, experienced beyond his years and a bit of an enigma.

Together, Sasha and Rooke are explosive and a bit toxic. Their passion and emotions are palpable and there were a couple (and only a couple) of really sweet romantic gestures between them. They are both really strong characters and will probably be together forever but it will mostly likely be a complete mess.

While I’m sure the illegal activities are probably exactly what happen in real life at times, it was all a bit much for me. Everything was wrapped up in a really neat bow with a complete surprise at the end. We still don’t know a whole lot about Rooke’s childhood and I don’t know that would help make him a more likeable person. I don’t hate him but he’s not the kind of alpha bada$$ I like.

I don’t know if these characters are in other stories or if this is going to be a complete standalone, but Jake is left dangling a bit. He played a pretty big role to be left alone and forgotten.

So…if you are not a sweet, sappy romance lover like me and really enjoy dark, gritty books you will probably love this story.
