Jacob Riley is a typical Hollywood former child star with issues. He has already done prison time and at the age of twenty-six has been arrested again.

Ethan Myers is the owner and manager of Macs, an education center providing teaching and learning to local low income families. Losing his partner to cancer leaves him lost and alone and he buries himself in his work to start to mend his broken heart.

Sparks fly when Jacob has to complete his community service at Macs. Their relationship grows against a background of disenfranchised street gang members, arson, the Oscars, and despite their prejudices.

Can Jacob Riley be saved?

Whew…I’m really torn on this book. I love the premise…Ethan recovering from the loss of a life partner and opening Macs; Jacob the spoiled, selfish, petulant Hollywood star forced into community service. But because of the length of the book and a lot happening off page or being assumed, I felt everything was rushed.

Jacob is completely unbearable when he arrives. We discover that there is more to Jacob, as expected but he’s had a lifetime of selfish, immature and wild behavior that turns around after pouring his heart out onto paper in 3 hours. I understand that what happens at Macs ignites the change but the seemingly few hours 180 turn of his behavior is hard to believe. I would have liked to see his change happen a little more slowly with more details of what he went through and how he arrived at feeling healed. Toward the end when his dad treated him badly and later when Jacob should have told Ethan what was happening, he regressed back to self-hating mode which to me means he wasn’t really healed. We start to see some healing with his family but most of that happens off page.

Ethan went from completely hating him with a low level of desire to wanting a relationship without much communication between them. He had a major panic attack at a pivotal moment with Jacob but the entire conversation about what caused it happened off page. His discussion with Jacob about his deceased partner all happened off page. There was no mention of Ethan’s healing from his grief. It was all assumed.

I’m ok with insta-lust but this was insta-cure and insta-love, neither of which works for me. This story needs to be longer and more developed bringing a lot of the off page stuff to the page. There is so much potential here for such an amazing book but most of that was never developed or seen by the reader. There is an amazing happy ending but I still felt short changed on the meat of the story.
