Let me start with this…I have a spectrum child, I have friends with aspie children and I have friends with autistic children. Life with these kids is very challenging at times and extremely rewarding at other times. Dealing with them in public can bring about unexpected disaster even for the most prepared mom…I’ve left grocery baskets full of food unpaid for at the front of the store more than once. I completely empathize with Avery and her situation. Ginger Scott’s portrayal of the struggles of a single mom with an Autistic child is heartfelt and really ‘spot on’. Avery is a true heroine.
So that brings me to Mason…and again I have to say wow. His maturation from the still cocky, mentally a teenager self to the man you absolutely fall in love with is in a word awesome. I actually felt like a proud parent ‘seeing’ him grow through this book. The way he interacts with Max is so special it will bring tears to your eyes.
The supporting characters are just as loveable as the main characters…in fact, I wouldn’t be sad to see a book about Cole and Claire (hint, hint Ginger Scott).
I’m not gonna lie to you…you will need tissues for parts of this book. My heart actually fluttered a few times while reading as well. And a couple of times I think I may have even said ‘awwww’ out loud. This book brings out every emotion you can possibly feel…and you feel it right down to your soul.
I’m not sure 5 stars is even enough, all I can say is that this book is an absolute must read.
I fell in love with Avery’s character. She was strong, solid, and REAL. Her daily struggles with max, her son, were just too real. They made me had to stop several times and gather myself, and no, I don’t think it’s because I’m a mom. It was just raw and real and how Ms. Scott captured all of the nuisances if this struggle, was simply……….wow. Mason, Mason, Mason……his progression and maturity through the novel was just as heartwarming to see. Not every man can handle having a special needs child, and Mason was just too sweet for words. As for the rest of the characters, they were all real, believable and Integral to moving the plot along.
This story is about struggle, finding time for love, adjusting to the unexpected, forgiveness, championing for the weaker one, a parent’s unconditional love and second chances. Bravo!
