Blurb:

Chase Payne is a walking contradiction. He’s the most powerful psychic in the Community, but the least respected. He’s the son of the Community’s founder, but with his tattoo sleeves and abrasive attitude, he’s nothing like his charismatic family. No one knows what to make of him, which is how he wound up locked in a cell on the Farm yet again. But this time, the only man he’s ever loved is there too.

Elijah Estrella was used to being the sassy sidekick who fooled around with Chase for fun. But that was before he realized the Community wasn’t the haven he’d believed in and Chase was the only person who’d ever truly tried to protect him. Now they’re surrounded by people who want to turn them against their friends, and the only way out is to pretend the brainwashing works.

With Chase playing the role of a tyrant’s second-in-command, and Elijah acting like Chase’s mindless sex toy, they risk everything by plotting a daring escape. In the end, it’s only their psychic abilities, fueled by their growing love for each other, that will allow them to take the Community down once and for all.

5 of 5 Stars

OK, so…I loved this series. Mr. Hassell is so ridiculously talented I could get pretty gushy pretty quickly. I love his ability to make me laugh in the middle of a heavy, tense situation and not have it seem forced or over the top. I love the complexity of the story. I wanted to savor each story while hurrying to finish so I know the outcome. He created characters that I simultaneously loved and wanted to go far away. He absolutely has me as a fan for life.

There was a lot going on in the conclusion to this series including meeting a couple new characters and some surprising twists on those we already met. Chase was a bit frustrating for me…I waffled between hating and loving him. I loved the manifestation of his strongest power and what triggered it. While all three couples seem to have an inexplicable, seemingly indestructible bond, Elijah and Chase almost seem mated…destined if you will. (I did have a small issue with them which I included below.)I was surprised by how entertaining Trent, Six and Chase are and would love to see them locked in a room together purely for our entertainment. Here are a couple of lines from them that seriously made me giggle.

“Babe, I’m in a room full of X-Men,” Trent muttered. “I’ll let you know when something sounds crazy.”

“For something other than fucking,” Six clarified, because he was helpful.

Chase halfway expected Six to make some other sex joke, but thankfully the cyborg kept his yap shut.

Reason number eight thousand and fifty why being a psychic was sometimes not all it was cracked up to be.

I do have a couple of teeny, tiny complaints.

1) I didn’t feel like Chase and Elijah’s relationship was fully restored/resolved. There was so much tension and angst that sort of just stopped with a really quick discussion. Chase’s perception of what was going on with Elijah and Holden completely put me off Elijah…and that wasn’t ever fully dissolved. Elijah was continuously treated poorly by Chase primarily because his bitterness toward Holden. I felt horrible for both of them for everything they survived but never really connected with them individually or as a couple.

2) I’m torn on the ending…the story doesn’t feel complete. We get a glimpse of possibility…not complete closure and I’m left wanting more. I’m not familiar enough with this author to know whether or not we’ll see more from this crew but I wouldn’t be surprised if we did.

Even with those couple of issues, this is still a must-read series. But clear your calendar because you aren’t going to want to stop once you start!
