Series: Dating In Denver Book One

(This is the prequel story to the short that appeared in the Grand Adventures Anthology)

Release Date: February 4, 2015

Blurb(s):

It all started with a diabetic kid who wouldn’t stop eating cookies. And a best friend who’d just announced his bisexuality and hit on everything that moved. And a kind pediatric nurse with an amazing rack, a lying ex-boyfriend, and a nasty case of the chicken pox.

But mostly, it started at table 42.

When Benjy Moreland almost collapses during his restaurant shift, Dr. Kyle Penners wants nothing more than to take care of him… but if there’s one thing former foster kid Benjy values, it’s his independence. A dying man and a sick little boy force Kyle and Benjy to work together, and both of them have to make some important choices about what it means to depend on someone.

Excerpt:

YEARS LATER, when people would ask Benjy and Kyle how they ended up together, Benjy would usually say this: “Oh, he came into my restaurant one night, and I thought he was cute, so I dumped beer all over him. Saw it in a romantic comedy once, so it seemed like a good idea.” People always laughed at that, and Kyle always rolled his eyes. And then they’d slyly smile at each other, and maybe Kyle would wink a little bit, because, as Benjy was fond of telling him, he liked winking way too much, and both of them would think about how there was so much more to the story than that.

Like a diabetic kid who wouldn’t stop eating cookies.

And a best friend who’d just announced his bisexuality and was intent on hitting on everything that moved.

And a kind pediatric nurse and her amazing rack.

And a lying ex-boyfriend.

And most of all, a nasty case of the chicken pox.

But before all that, it had started with Benjy dumping beer all over Kyle—and before that, it had really started with Benjy, a twenty-two-year old college senior, waking up with a horrible taste in his mouth.

Christin’s Review:

Depending on YouDepending on You by J.E. Birk

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

i am surprised there was so much packed into a short story. i liked the writing and the character development was fairly deep considering the length of the story.

kyle definitely has the whole white knight complex down. he just wants to fix things. he doesn’t realize how/why the way he does it isn’t the best way to help folks until things start to unravel a bit for him. his intentions are noble even though he doesn’t always handle things the best way. his white knight complex makes him a great doctor but is a bit of a disadvantage in his personal relationships. i didn’t really care for the kid ‘endearment’. i would have liked to see a different pet name for benjy.

benjy has a bit of a chip on his shoulder and doesn’t really care for the ‘help’ kyle is offering. he doesn’t want to be seen as a charity case in need of help since that’s how he’s felt his entire life. he wants someone to see how strong he is and wants someone that realizes he can take care of himself and love him the way he is instead of trying to make him dependent on someone.

i like that there wasn’t too much angst. and the supporting characters – brett, daniel, alex, brandon and even vanessa were great additions to the story. i’m anxious to read the rest of the story in the grand adventures!

About the author:

J.E. Birk has been telling stories since she could talk and writing them since she was introduced to the alphabet. She hails from Colorado, where you can usually find her skiing, training for a 5k she won’t end up running, or trying to figure out why a good strong housecleaning never lasts longer than two days.

QA

Q:  You were one of the contributing authors for the ‘Grand Adventures’ anthology.  What was it like to be a part of such an amazing group of people doing such an amazing thing for fellow authors?

A:  It was such an incredible honor to be a part of that anthology! I feel lucky that I was able to offer some level of support—however small— to two authors who have been such an inspiration for my writing.

Q:  Where did you get the idea for ‘Depending on You’?

A:  I’ve been playing with the characters of Benjy and Kyle in my head and on paper for quite some time. When I heard that Dreamspinner was looking for authors to participate in the Grand Adventures anthology, I submitted the story “The Twinkie Ignition” because I wanted to do something to support that cause.

The only problem with publishing “The Twinkie Ignition” was that it came very late in Benjy and Kyle’s storyline…and I still wanted to tell their origin story, so to speak. So I wrote Depending on You, and I consider myself very lucky that Dreamspinner wanted to publish it.

Q:  Where and when is your favorite place to write?

A:  There’s this recliner in my living room that I spend far too much time writing in. At this point, I think it’s molded to my body!

Q:  Where is your favorite place to ski?

A:  Anywhere in Colorado! I’m originally from Vermont, where the skiing isn’t very powdery or as big. Discovering Colorado skiing when I moved here was like some sort of dream come true.

I’m not a very strong skier compared to others, so I tend to stick to blue runs in resorts I know well. I do love trying to push myself as a skier, and right now I’m trying to figure out how to do moguls. My knees are less than impressed with life venture.

Q:  Where is your dream vacation?

A:  Any vacation that allows me to see something new! I love exploring the world and being part of different cultures. Right now my husband and I are debating between Italy, Peru, and China for our next big outing. Last week I saw a part of Wyoming I’d never seen before, which was fantastic. Travel, for me, is just about having new experiences.

My favorite cookie is the Snickerdoodle. Unfortunately, I don’t have a recipe I just wait for my cousin to make some!

  2. J. Elisabeth Birk says:

Thanks so much for coming by, ReeDee! I loooove Snickerdoodles. Then again, I basically love all cookies. Ever.
