Excerpt:

When it gets dark, he texts Brian that he’s going to be out late, and avails himself of not one but three vampire-human nightclubs set along a dense strip of Chicago nightlife. Going alone to places like this always attracts immediate attention, and he isn’t surprised when he has to pry both humans and vampires off of himself. But he doesn’t mind—the blood from the center is humming in his veins, and that buzz takes on a new dimension every time that he swallows a thimbleful of blood from a donor, which he does at least a dozen times over the course of the evening. When he’s more relaxed, he allows bodies against his own, dancing with strangers until strobe lights become normal and everything outside is too dim and still.

The blood changes the world around him. Every color, every sound and every source of light takes on a life of its own.

He loses track of how many donors he pays. All he knows is he’s spent all of the pocket money that Brian gave him for the weekend.

He feels like a bloated tick. He’s been away too long. Brian. He has to get back to Brian.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Melissa Graves author of Tainted Heart

Hi Melissa, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Q: What’s the best line you ever wrote?

A: Throughout Tainted Heart, we get to know Brian and Kyle in many new ways. One of the lines that’s my favorite from the book is toward the end. I won’t give the context entirely away, but this is the culmination of Kyle making several realizations about himself, something that, when I wrote it, set warning bells off in my head. I realized I had arrived at a new place with this young character, a transition that signified a passage into maturity. For the first time I felt him as an adult.

“There’s darkness in Kyle. He sees it now. And maybe it’s always been there.”

Q: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, what kind?

A: Only when the mood of what I’m writing is very specific—a sex or fight scene, for instance. Movie scores are great, as are instrumentals. I’m a 90’s kid, so anything epic from that time period is likely on my computer. The soundtrack from Interview with a Vampire goes without saying!

Q: If your book were made into a movie, what actors would you like to see star?

A: This sounds so hipster—not that there’s anything wrong with that!—but I am a huge fan of unknowns. I’d love to see fresh faces play these characters. But okay, it would be a huge lie to say that I wouldn’t want Chris Colfer to play Kyle, hands down. Whenever he decides to branch out into sexy, paranormal roles, he’s welcome to call me!

Q: What genres do you write in?

A: I consider myself an erotica writer before anything else. It just so happens that the niche I find most enjoyable is queer sci-fi/fantasy. Most of the time, there’s a paranormal element to my stories—but as long as my characters are getting their grooves on in the bedroom regularly, I’m happy!

Q: Where and when do you prefer to write?

A: If I’m writing during the day, I have to be in a place where I’m completely alone and in silence. It helps if I don’t have access to the Internet (damn you, Tumblr!). But if I’m writing at night I can usually narrow my focus even if I’m not alone by turning out the lights, putting on a pair of headphones, and buckling down. Mostly, I just need the right headspace, and I need to be able to stay there and not be distracted.

A veteran writer of fan fiction with thousands of followers, Melissa Graves wrote her first story at age thirteen, and by age sixteen had met her future husband in an online vampire fiction chat room. A fan of science fiction and fantasy, she has a degree in anthropology and a passion for good chocolate, amateur erotica and fan worlds that celebrate diversity. She is mother to two cats.
