Blurb:

Detective Sergeant Vincent Sweetwater hates dead bodies. That’s why he’s an undercover narc and not a homicide dick. So why is he standing on a sandy beach in California staring at a lifeless body—oh yeah, the suicide attempt. Lieutenant Hanson is making a statement. Something about life worth living. Shows what he knows.

As Vince examines the tortured body, he feels an empathy and déjà vu for the victim, her wounds are similar to scars he has only a vague memory receiving. An intense desire to find her killer fills his queasy belly as a dark game of cat and mouse begins.

The young woman’s death forces Vince back into a secret life dominated by sex, perversion, and sadomasochism. Estranged from his wife he still loves and longing for the man who possessed him once, Vince buries his torment deep inside meaningless sex.

Excerpt:

Vincent Sweetwater twisted the Harley’s throttle. The power in the motor thrummed between his legs. The bike seemed heavy, angry; like she wanted to fall flat on her face. Like she yearned to drag him across the gritty asphalt. Vince needed to feel the pavement shred his clothing and bite into his skin. Punishment for being a man who thrived on suffering.

Why can’t I control myself, damn it?

-You’re supposed to be one of the good guys.

Fuck off.

-Stop drinking, Sweetwater.

Vince envisioned choking the life out of his conscience. The damn thing made it difficult to be an asshole, yet somehow he didn’t let it stop him. Nothing stopped him from being a dick to his wife. Vince squeezed the throttle. The speed would numb his mind.

The machine growled beneath him, giving her two fucking cents, and he ignored the wanton slut. Vince was too malicious to give her what she craved. If he did, there would be no turning back.

Still, the iron bitch demanded more power. Urged by a quiet whisper from somewhere in the darkness of his mind, Vince let off the throttle long enough to grasp the clutch and toe it into sixth.

Author Interview:

QAToday I’m very lucky to be interviewing Michele Micheal “Mikey” Rakes author of Trainwreck the series.

Hi Mikey, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Well, I have a degree in the surgical sciences. I also have spent much of my life building windows. I work in the custom shop where we make all the round and gabled windows. It’s a bit of an art form.

I’ve been writing since I was in the third grade, but had a fire which destroyed all my manuscripts on Thanksgiving 1998. Didn’t write again until 2010. Trainwreck is the product of that burst of creativity. There is much of myself in the main character, Vincent Sweetwater. My wife who recently passed is embodied by Mica Sweetwater and my husband is a combo of Mica and Greg. Dunne.

Trainwreck is one man’s journey to find out who he really is and what he really wants out of the rest of his life. Surrounded by loss since a child, Vince struggles to deal with his family and the people around him. As an LAPD detective, he finds himself embroiled in a murder case which seems to be quickly turning into a serial homicide. Disturbing elements of the case lead Vince to believe the killer is someone he knew in childhood. To find out, Vince is plunged back into the world of sadomasochism and the man he left behind. Torn between his love for his wife and the overwhelming desire to submit to this man leaves Vince desperate and hopeless…unless he can find a way to bring the three of them together. Unfortunately, until he solves the homicide, he can’t focus on himself, or the people he loves.

Q:  Why do you write?

A:  My family members are an artistic lot. My mother and brother are painters and draw fabulously, my sister is a sculptor, and I’m a writer. Being a writer is something I always loved.

Q:  Which of your books was the most difficult to write?

A:  Trainwreck was difficult to write because I set out to write an unconventional love story, but the characters took off on their own. They’d whisper in my ear at night, telling me all their secrets. For six months, I was in their thrall, and now years later, it’s finally time to set them free.

Q:  Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

A:  Vincent Sweetwater is a wreck, but deep down he’s a guy who wants to be better. He wants to love better. Vince has always struggled to do what’s right and he’s been accused of many things. Some of them he did, while most have been false accusations. He’s addicted to sex, or rather, he’s addicted to punishing himself through sex. The man loves his wife so much, he can’t bring himself to defile her with his deviant sexual desires. The man he loves, has pushed him so far away, Vince feels there is no hope. He refuses to confide in his brother, his wife, or even in the man he loves. Meanwhile, he’s forced to work a homicide case that threatens to break his tenuous grasp on his sanity.

Q:  How much research do you do for your books?

A:  However much is needed. If I have to learn the ins and outs of football, down to a playbook, then I will. Hours of watching football. Time spent on youtube studying how players interact on the field and in the locker room. I have books on police procedure, coaching college and pro ball, and right now I’m working on a series of books for next year involving research into ancient Egyptian history.

Q:  Who designs your covers?

A:  Drai Bearwomyn is a family friend and a great person. She stayed with Papa, performing ritual and seeing him through to the other side during his cremation. I love her, but she’s never done covers for this genre before, so she’s having a blast. My other covers: Seneca Featherstone did Saving Kane. Valerie Tibbs did Fourth and Long. Cora of Cora Graphics did Ephemeral Darkness and Cold Darkness was done by Shirley Bennett.
