Synopsis:

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.

“You’re pregnant.”

“It’s a boy.”

“Your son needs a heart transplant.”

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Lies.

Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.

Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.

“He’s gone.”

For ten years, the darkness consumed me.

In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.

“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

YM‘s review

5 of 5 Stars
One Word.

I think I’ve liked everything Aly Martinez has written and The Darkest Sunrise is no different.

The Darkest Sunrise begins with such powerful scene, that there’s no way you don’t feel the giant punch to your stomach. I seriously doubled over with the sheer intensity of it. It was painful, it was real and it was excruciatingly well written.

Charlotte Mills, the main character/heroine in this book is a pulmonologist, living hell on earth. She is so well written that I could feel her all through my heart. Her darkness was suffocating. She’s trying to move on and find a way to live, while stuck in a sort of pergutory.

Enter Porter Reese. He recognized the darkness in her eyes. He was perfect and muddling through his own darkness. The awkwardness of their meeting, spending time together, getting to know each other was just so sweet. I loved it. (It made me have that small sweet smile when I was reading it).

Oh!!! I adore these 2! I loved their need to meet in the darkness. It seems like such a random comment or thought but it was perfection. Their ability to recognize that the darkness is where they would start and work their way to the light was no small thing.

This story was so well written and intricately woven. I could feel it coming, but wasn’t sure how’d I’d get there, and what would happen when I did. Speechless. Yes, it ends in a cliffhanger. Yes, I have to wait and see how she brings this back around. But, holy crap. What a ride! It was a phenomenal.

Read it! Savor it! Lose yourself in it! You won’t regret it!

AUTHOR INFORMATION:

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
