“Brighton, the letter…” Grumpy from his headache and the impending conversation, he snarled at his friend. The Duke wanted to get it over with so he could finally be certain.
“Ah, I was amazed that you had kept up the conversation for so long without mentioning it. When I regard your face, dear friend, it would have been a good idea to let you speak first.” At once serious, the Marquis’ head fell back and he watched the stars.
“You spoke, not I,” the Duke corrected him.
“Because no one else would do it. Pure necessity, my dear.” Brighton looked at him with a shrug, examining his stoic face before he continued talking. “I told you that I would soon have some information about Adam, but you won’t like it. Have you ever heard of the Tauren? Probably not. You were abroad over the last few years.”
The Marquis sighed thoughtfully. He didn’t even wait for his friend to shake his head. “At any rate, they were a group of aristocrats, who tried to solve their problems by means of the occult. We are talking about black candles, alchemy, and spells— all harmless nonsense. However at some point it was rumored that this so-called sect had begun to sacrifice animals. Tasteless, if you ask me, but ok. We still considered them to be profusely quirky nutcases. Trying to restore the virility of aging nobility by sacrificing toads is, in the best case, a waste of time and money, but not dangerous if you’re not the toad. Thus they were largely ignored and sneered at. Then a Lady disappeared… I can’t even remember what her name was. You know, one of these young aristocratic women from the country, who are usually sent here to find a fitting husband. At first everyone thought that the woman, like so many others, had eloped with a muscular stable boy. Then someone found her body a few weeks later. She was naked, mutilated with ritualistic scars, and likely with some organs missing. You can imagine what kind of a panic broke out! The suspicion fell on the Tauren, since the dead woman exhibited similar injuries to the animals that had been sacrificed. But no one could prove anything. Suddenly, one year and six victims later, it just stopped. The sect fell off the map. That was two years ago. As it pertains to your brother, he was also a member of the Tauren, but left soon after the first murder, a least according to my information. That being said, it is rumored that he continued to belong to the circle. The question is whether or not this had anything to do with his death. Most likely the group actually dissolved, and that’s all just a coincidence…” As if he wanted to rid himself of old ghosts, the Marquis shook his head.
“Or someone is settling old debts,” Benedikt said, finishing the thought.
