Q:  OK…the idea of this story (which is so fantastic)…where did it come from?

A:  Thank you so much!  The idea of this story came from so many different places—no pun intended.  Really what it boils down to is that I like to be ambitious with my storytelling.  I like to have a lot of scope.  When I’m writing, I do best when I don’t “just stay in the room.”  I have to get out, move around a lot, change my stimuli and only then do I continue finding inspiration.  I got to wondering what would happen if I could write a novel not only using this method, but making it an integral aspect of the novel itself.

Q:  How many of the 50 states have you visited, if any?  Which is your favorite and why?

A:  Oh, I haven’t visited nearly enough.  I’ve spent a lot of time in New York and California, I had a trip to Indiana, and I also spent time down in Florida—my friend Carrie Pack and I even road-tripped back to New York from Florida together, which took me through a whole bunch of states!  My current favourite state is New York.  I’ve seen both sides of it: the city, and the more ‘suburban’ areas across the Hudson, and it all has this one unifying undercurrent of excitement.  The city literally never sleeps, and even when you’re outside the city, just knowing that it’s so close makes me feel like a child waking up on Christmas morning.

Q:  You are a contributing ghost writer for non-fiction books.  Which do you prefer to write – non-fiction or fiction?

A:  I’ve honestly loved writing both.  While I obviously can’t talk too much about my ghostwriting work, what I can say is that I’ve been blessed with the chance to help others find their voice and get some incredible, inspiring stories out into the world.  It has also stretched me creatively, and furthered my abilities with fiction—the thing with ghostwriting is that you can’t have an ego about it.  You have to capture the voice of the person whose story you’re telling, and I think we can all relate to wanting to be able to tell our own stories in the way that feels closest to our own voice.

Q:  What are the names and colors of your cats?

A:  Chunk is the eldest—she turns six soon—and she’s a Bengal mix, so she’s stripy with a few spots on her belly.  Then there’s Hershey (named for Barbara Hershey in Beaches, not the chocolate!) who’s pure black, and probably one of the dumbest cats you’ve ever met.  I also have two other black cats that were rescues: Nina and Jinx, who are sisters, and spend most of their time curled up together so closely that you can rarely tell where one ends and the other begins.

Q:  What is your favorite place to write?  What time of day are you most productive with your writing?

A:  Like I said earlier, I always mix it up when it comes to finding a place to write.  Most of my writing does take place in my bedroom, either in bed with my laptop or at my desk.  My dad recently made me a huge Adirondack chair, though—and that’s my new favourite place.  If we’re talking out of the house, I can write most places as long as there isn’t too much going on.  There’s a beautiful park in my town where I found a little grove.  It’s little more than a clearing surrounded by trees, but if you get there at the right time of day there are little puddles of sunlight everywhere, and I like to take my notebook and pen to one of the picnic benches and sit with my music.  That’s really the only time I’m truly productive during the day, though—most of my writing takes place after dark!

Excerpt:

Because anything really could happen, couldn’t it? What if what happened in Philadelphia wasn’t a total mistake, but simply the prelude to Jake finally listening to what his instincts have been telling him for weeks? What if, what if, what if…

“What are you doing? Come see this!” Aiden calls out.

Jake takes a deep breath and steps out of the shadows. Aiden is silhouetted against the fading sun, the light picking out the auburn in his hair, and as he stretches his arms up over his head, one finger hooked through the woven bracelet he bought earlier, he grins out at the horizon. Jake feels as if he’s watching Aiden through brand new eyes; he knows that there is rescue in those arms. Suddenly he wants to fall into them and hold on until he feels safe.

Aiden turns away from the vista, pushes his sunglasses up on top of his head and looks down at Jake, his eyes sparkling with warmth and light. He leans forward and holds out his hand, and he looks… beautiful.
